NOTES

1. The notion of “faithfully rendering” is terribly problematic. All I intend to suggest is that the creators of comics like these seem to take a certain deferential posture toward the canonical text. They do not intend to interrogate, critique, rework, or rewrite the canonical material, but merely to illuminate it in service to its perceived message—both that contained within and that conveyed iconically.

2. It is, after all, the Action Bible, so, for example, levitical laws, the messages of the prophets, and the bulk of Paul’s letters—to say nothing of those poor “catholic” epistles—are left lying on the cutting room floor.

3. There is an odd paradox inherent in nearly every “children’s Bible.” In an effort to attract young audience members to the Bible, we offer them a different Bible.
